Strength Does Not Always Look the Way People Expect

I am realising that strength does not always look the way people expect it to. People expect strength to be visible. Composed. Certain. Moving forward with purpose and clarity and a plan. What I have lived for the past several months looks nothing like that. And I suspect what many of you are living looks nothing like that either.

Sometimes strength is just doing things you do not feel ready for. Handling situations you never had to deal with before. Making decisions on your own — not because you feel strong, but because there is no other option.

The Strength Nobody Sees.

The moments that nobody sees are the ones that matter most. The small, everyday decisions. Opening a bank account in your own name for the first time. Going to a government office alone and asking the right questions. Signing a document you do not fully understand and then going home and researching what it means. Renewing a passport for your children without help. Making a phone call you have been dreading for three weeks.

None of these things look like strength from the outside. From the outside, they look like administration. Like tasks. Like the boring, necessary logistics of keeping a life running.

But I know what they cost. I know the versions of you that show up in those moments — the you that is exhausted and uncertain and doing it anyway. And I want to say: that is strength. That is, in fact, the most real kind.

What Rebuilding Actually Looks Like

When I started building HerSphere properly — in the months immediately after my husband died — I was not ready. There was no version of those months in which I felt prepared for what I was taking on. The grief was still very present. The practical overwhelm was constant. But purpose is the thing that pulled me forward when nothing else did. Not confidence. Not certainty. Not a clear plan. Just the knowledge that this thing I was building mattered, and that if I stopped moving towards it the days would be even harder. Rebuilding does not require you to feel strong. It requires you to move — even slightly, even imperfectly — in the direction of the thing that matters.

For Women in the UAE Navigating This Alone

In the UAE, the women I see who are widowed, or newly single, or separated from their support networks, are doing something extraordinary and almost entirely invisible.

They are navigating a legal and administrative system in a country that was not built for them to navigate alone. They are managing finances they may not have managed independently before. They are raising children in a country far from the grandparents, the aunts, the village of people who would have helped. They are maintaining their residency visa, their health insurance, their children's school placements, their business licences — all the infrastructure of a life — while in the middle of the biggest emotional crisis of their lives.

And they are doing it. Largely without recognition. Largely without acknowledgement that what they are doing is extraordinary.

I see it. I want to say that plainly. The women in this community — the widows and single mothers and women starting over in the UAE — are doing something that deserves to be named as the remarkable thing it is.

What I Would Tell You Right Now

You do not have to feel strong to keep going. The keeping going is the strength — even when it is only one step, even when the step is small, even when nobody is watching and you are not sure it is worth it. Every time you figure something out on your own — a form, a process, a decision — you are building a version of yourself that can carry more than you thought you could. That version is not built in dramatic moments. It is built in ordinary ones. And you are not building it alone. Not here, in this community. Not anymore.
